The Summer Playscheme is run over 15 days in July and August and is for 8 to 12-year-olds. It has been running for over twenty years and is open to children across the city, with discounted places being offered as a priority to children from the local inner city LS7, thanks to support from Leeds City Council and Leeds Play Network. It is extremely popular, with places selling out quickly every year .
The Playscheme is run by experienced professionals and also enables 15 to 18-year-old ‘helpers’ from deprived areas of Leeds to volunteer alongside, giving them valuable experience and developing their motivation, self-esteem and teamwork.
The activities are based around outdoor play and the natural world and are designed to break down barriers, increase co-operation and develop a greater awareness of nature. It has a low cost approach, as part of the farm’s ethos of recycling and using the natural environment.
Highlights from previous Playschemes include:
- Indian day
- Soap and candle making
- Grass sledging
- Mountain biking
- CSI Meanwood day, with a visit from the local Community Police
- Zoo Lab where children could handle giant spiders and millipedes.
- Day trips to Howstean Gorge
- Canoeing at Pugneys Water Park
- Ilkley Moor.
These provided the children with a valuable and tremendously enjoyable opportunity to experience new and exciting activities and places in the local countryside.
The emphasis for the play scheme is definitely on fun; the children get to socialise and make new friends from a diverse mix of ethnicities and backgrounds, whilst learning about the environment.
The Playscheme runs in the first 3 weeks of summer holidays for 8 to 12 year olds. To book a place email email@example.com.
