Wheels For Fun
Wheels 4 Fun
Wheels 4 Fun is a cycling group for adults with a physical disability who would like to cycle but are currently unable to or who have a bike they can ride but don’t have people they can go out riding with.
Who can we help and how?
We aim to help people with a range of health conditions causing physical disability to be able to exercise on wheels using tricycles or tandems. We can also use adult stabiliser wheels and other bikes to help people regain their balance and confidence so they are able to ride a normal bike after illness or injury. We cannot guarantee that we will have something suitable for you to ride, but if we don’t, we will give you advice on other places that may be able to help you. The group cannot cater for children or people with severe disability who need a hoist to transfer; it is not aimed at those with mental health issues or learning disabilities but if people have aspects of these problems in addition to physical disability, they will not be excluded. If you are not sure whether this is for you, ring Trish on 0113 2695028 to discuss.
When does it take place?
The group will start with an Open day on Saturday 25 June 11 AM to 1 PM at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm and will continue on Saturdays but with the intention that there will also be opportunities to go out riding during the week depending on demand and availability of volunteers. To begin with, we are not operating a booking system while we assess demand but we may need to introduce this at a later date. For now, we suggest that anyone interested just comes along between 11AM and 1PM on a Saturday but we ask that you are prepared to be patient if we are busy.
What does it cost?
We would prefer not to charge a specific fee but need money to put towards running costs so would ask our customers to make a donation of a few pounds when they use the bikes.
What equipment is needed?
Helmets and high visibility vests can be loaned but participants will need to come suitably dressed for cycling.
We hope that people will want to stay for a chat and a cuppa at the Barn Coffee Shop and that in the long term, people who ride the bikes will become involved in running the group and deciding on future developments.
When and where will we ride?
On Saturdays, we will mainly ride on the predominantly off road cycle route that passes through Meanwood Valley Urban Farm but intermittently, we will be joined by the ‘Easy Riders’ section of Leeds Cycling Campaign cycling group which will give those able to cycle slightly longer distances on road the chance to go out on a club ride. We also hope to have volunteers who will act as cycling companions who will go out with participants at other times by arrangement and as mutually convenient.
