Rocks and Soil
- Key Stage Two
- Full Day (or half day Rocks or Soils)
First the class have a tour of the farm to look at rock types and their uses. They find out what group they belong to, e.g sedimentary, metamorphic, igneous, how old they are and some history of their formation.
Indoors children carry out various tests to determine the identity of 4 rocks. They also discover the relationship between soil and rock and have the opportunity to look at rock structure through the digital microscope.
The class examine soil found on the farm and are encouraged to think about what it’s made of and words to describe how it feels and smells. The first activity is to try and make some soil themselves with ingredients found while walking around the Farm. Can they do it? Inside we take a close look a some soils by dividing it into its ingredients, they make a visual record of this to take back to school.
To finish off, the class make wormeries to take back to school and study. They get to source the worms themselves from the chicken run!
