The domestic Angora goat is originally from Ankara, (formerly known as Angora, hence its name!) in Turkey. They are well known for their lovely silky fleeces that produce the fibre known as Mohair, (from which we can make lovely fluffy jumpers). Angora goats produce between four and five kilograms of hair per year, each! Because of their rapid hair growth, they need a diet of high quality nutrition; otherwise their coats won’t grow as fast and will loose their lustre.
Random fact: The first Angora goats were brought to Europe as long ago as 1554, by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor.
(Our little white Angora goats are Angora Cross; they’re actually crossed with an Anglo Nubian breed!)
